Did the Ancient Greeks and Romans Create Any Jewelry?

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Did the Greeks create their own jewelry? Yes, in fact the first true examples of Ancient Greek Jewelry are pieces which utilized beads shaped in the form of various animals and shells. By–00 B.C. the Greeks had started to incorporate gemstones and gold into their jewelry. By the year 300 B.C they ventured into the area of colored jewelry, utilizing pearls, amethysts, and emeralds as well. They also made cameos from the Indian Sardonyx (a striped down pink and cream agate). In reality, Greek jewelry started off with very simple designs, but they became increasingly more complex and elaborate as time went on.

Jewelry was a bit of a luxury in the world of Ancient Greeks. It was not worn in the daily lives of people, but during special occasions or while on public appearances. A common gift of the time, it was often used to show off a lady’s beauty, social status, and incredible wealth. It was thought that jewelry had mystical powers, such as protection from the “Evil Eye”. The “Evil Eye” was a look that another person could send your way to bring you injury or bad luck…or so it was thought. Most of the Greek jewelry of this time period was made from silver and gold, with ivory and gemstones, clay and bronze thrown into the mix as well.

Christmas Gift Baskets for Men

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

It seems to be hard to buy for men. At least it is for me. There are only so many times I can buy golf clubs or fishing gear before I am looking for new ideas to get for the men in my life. This has led me to think a lot about things like gift baskets for him. Though women often get these from friends and family alike, it is not often many think to get them for the men they love. Just like the female version of these, they can be tailored to whatever it is that the man in your life might like to have.

You can fill gift baskets for him with food items if you wish, and that is always something that is appreciated. This is especially good for the single guy that does not like to shop or cook. I know this is something that we often get for my dad. He lives on his own and is not a great cook. When we find something he likes that we can include in a gift basket, it saves him from cooking a few meals, and he is always happy to get this.

In fact, pearls are also considerably woman’s best friend and are fine additions for jewelries to look unique and more glamorous than ever. The History of Mother’s Day

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days, because this day has a number of different origins. Some sources say that this day comes from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece.

The ancient Romans also had a holiday, called Matronalia, and during this day mothers received gifts. Besides the Mother’s Day, in many countries International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th.

The author of modern Mother’s Day holiday is thought to be Anna Jarvis. In 1912 she trademarked phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s day”. She has also created the Mother’s Day International Association.

Anna Jarvis created this day to honor the mother, not mothers in general. Meaning, the day is dedicated for the mother of each person, and each person has to honor his own mother.

The day was not recognized as national holiday immediately. Anna Jarvis first held a memorial for her late mother in 1907. It was a private ceremony. Later she ran campaigns to make this day popular.

Mother’s Day became popular in 1910 when clothing merchant John Wanamaker financed the campaigns. The holiday spread as a day for mother appreciation. It was accepted as national holiday by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 2009.

Last Chance Mother’s Day Ideas

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

When I was writing this post there’s less than a month left until the Mother’s Day and there’s still time to get the gift. But I realize it’s not gonna be long and many will find themselves not having gotten the present and the time inevitable coming. So below are some of the ideas for the last chance gift.

First of all you will always be able to get flowers, so do that. In addition you can get some expensive chocolate. Or alternatively you can get a fruit basket. It’s a simple gift but a good one nonetheless.

But for it to be a really good gift we need something personal. And for the sake of this post I want to introduce the idea of a card made of old photos that have a meaning to you and your mother. It’s similar to scrapbooking but needs you to spare much less time, which you don’t have when we’re talking about last chance gifts.

The most feasible idea to make such a card is to use a computer. If you have any graphic editing skills you can do that simply with a program like Photoshop. Or you can look for some e-card templates online. Then print it out and add it to you flowers or the basket.

The Meaning of Mother’s Day

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Every year in May we dedicate one day of the year to our beloved person - our mom. We take the time to show our appreciation and our love. On this day when we pay all our attention to her, especially if we have forgotten to do that during the year.

It’s easy to forget our important people in the daily routine. We go fast to our jobs and back home and often we forget them. It is a great tradition to remember our mom at least that once in a year and let her know that we love her.

It is not with our gifts that we show that but by sharing our memories and emotions, paying her a visit and spending all day with her. This day has a deep meaning for her and for us. That is the time to refresh our connection.

Presents we give her, are the symbol of our attention, but they have to show our feelings. The gift is merely a token, but it must show the intent. Some people choose not to give presents at all, that way exposing their feelings instead.
